Our History from 1904-Now
1802—West Point Military Academy established the first Honor Code in the United States, based on the military code of Honor, which states that a student’s word is his bond.
1837- The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is founded
1854 - The first Engineering classes are offered at the University of Michigan in Civil Engineering
1904- A general student “Union Committee” is established to oversee the student judicial system on campus for all colleges.
1906- The College of Engineering’s secret society, the Vulcans, is founded. The Union Committee reorganized into the “Student Council.”
1915- The Vulcans proposed and motioned faculty to create a subsection of the Student Council called the Engineering Honor Committee to deal only with the College of Engineering.
1920- The Engineering Honor Code is created based on the West Point Military Academy Honor Code and must be written on exams.
1931- Engineering Honor Committee rebrands as Engineering Honor Society
1944- WW2 led to the temporary suspension of the Honor Code
1948- After years of petitioning, the Honor Code is reinstated, and the Engineering Honor Society is renamed the Engineering Honor Council
1952- Students could report Honor Council violations in private and with anonymity
2004- Honor Council splits into Engineering and LSA Honor Councils
2018- MOSS anti-cheat allows for easy detection of copied code. The number of cases each year balloons from less than ten to hundreds.
2020- Honor Council switches from doing cases in-person to online
2022- Engineering Honor Council becomes a student organization
